The last train

The train station at the end of my street hasn't seen a real train in years - the last one pulled out in the late seventies or thereabouts. The tracks have been ripped up and much of the line became overgrown or fenced into the neighbouring paddock and grazed.

But now it has been transformed. Gravel has been laid, bridges reconstructed and a bike trail created. It's not all there yet. After pedalling so far you will come across a small creek that is still in need of a bridge, but work is well under way.

Out the front gate, down the road and I'm on the trail in less than a minute. I have only ridden the first haul up to the top of the cutting. Apparently it was one of the longest, steepest bits of railway in Victoria making it one of the longest, steepest bits of rail trail.

At the top of the cutting is a lookout, a place to stop and take in the view over the farms to the Cathedrals. It was such a nice view that I scooted back down the hill and home to get my camera. which meant riding up the hill again to take the photo.

That was a few weeks ago. Since then it has rained a bit and the pasture is much greener ... and I haven't had the chance to get back out there for another ride and some more photos. Soon. My aim is to get to Bonnie Doon and ride over the Lake Eildon bridge. Or Cheviot and through the old rail tunnel. Or perhaps just to Yarck for a coffee.
