On the edge of town there is a remnant of the bush that once covered what is now the local supermarket, bowls club, house where I live and so on. It’s a small patch of scrub that has been grazed, dug over for gold, used for dog walking and finally reserved for flora and fauna conservation. Most little towns have one just like it.

Some locals know it well and could name every plant and animal in it. Some people have painted them, picked blooms for bouquets, or photographed them.

To walk every track takes just over an hour; longer if you decide to stop and investigate what is happening around you, which birds are calling and what plants are flowering.

Spring is a nice time with lots of little blooms, including a number of orchids.
